The invention relates to a device for cooling moving flat material (2) made from a mixture of lignocellulosic and/or cellulosic particles which are preferably mixed with binding agent, in particular HDF and UTHDF panels, or MDF and UTMDF panels, following a hot, compressing production process, wherein the cooling can be performed via at least one circulating surface of a circulating belt (7) or of a circulating roll shell of a cooling element (4), which circulating surface is in contact with the flat material (2) during operation in the running direction over a length of at least 100 mm, wherein the circulating belt (7) or the circulating roll shell can be loaded with a cooling fluid on the inside and can be pressed against the flat material (2) under a contact pressure. In order to make it possible to further process the flat material more rapidly, it is provided that a plurality of cooling elements (4) are provided behind one another with at least one temperature equalization zone (10) lying in between.
