PURPOSE: An automatic door opening and closing system for a railway vehicle and a method thereof are provided to minimize the damage of human life and property due to a fire by guaranteeing the safety of passengers as a top priority even in unexpected emergency situations. CONSTITUTION: An automatic door opening and closing system(100) for a railway vehicle comprises an emergency situation detecting part(110), a situation determining part(120), and a door control part(130). The emergency situation detecting part detects whether or not emergency situations are generated in a railway vehicle. If the emergency situation detecting part detects the emergency situation, the situation determining part determines the conditions of the railway vehicle or situations in passenger cars. The door control part controls the opening and closing of a door corresponding to the conditions of the railway vehicle and the situations in the passenger cars determined by the situation determining part.
