The method involves recording a real image (20) of a lane (11) lying before a vehicle. A safety distance to a preceding vehicle (30) is determined based on a driving dynamic characteristic e.g. speed, of the vehicle. The real image is expanded around a virtual image portion. The portion is generated as a graphics element (31) e.g. cross bar, which displays the safety distance to the preceding vehicle in a correct position. The expanded real image is represented on a display device. Distance information, which is relative to a distance to the preceding vehicle, is represented by the element.
