The method involves detecting force exerted on a data carrier body (10) by strain gauges (20, 20', 20'', 20'''), and determining position of force exertion on a surface of the body. Starting value is displayed by a display device of a portable data carrier (5), and the starting value is changed to an input value by exerting the force on an input field (50) such that the field is not disclosed from the type of force exertion on the field. The input value is displayed by the display device, where the starting value is selected from a predetermined, linear or circularly arranged input alphabet.
