<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical code which has a specific gravity of 1 or less for improving performance such as weight reduction, thinning, and handling property (flexural property) so that it can be brought in a headrace for use. <P>SOLUTION: An optical code 1 is configured of: an optical fiber element wire 11 as an optical transmission medium; a plurality of tensile-strength bodies 12 which are disposed in a longitudinal direction along the outer periphery of the optical fiber element wire 11 with intervals between themselves; and a sheath 13 which is disposed such that the tensile-strength bodies 12 are surrounded, and which is transparent and has a specific gravity of 1 or less.
