<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device and a luminaire that improve lighting starting performance and reduce degradation of a high pressure discharge lamp by optimizing a preheating phase time. <P>SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp lighting device, which is powered by an output of a DC power supply E1, comprises: a step-down chopper circuit section 1; an inversion circuit section 2; a pulse generation circuit section 3; and a control section 4. The high pressure discharge lamp lighting device comprises: a dielectric breakdown phase in which a high pressure discharge lamp La dielectrically breaks down to start to discharge; a preheating phase in which the high pressure discharge lamp La starts discharging and transitions from unstable lighting to stable lighting; and a lighting phase in which a predetermined current/power is supplied to the high pressure discharge lamp La. A high pressure discharge lamp voltage is monitored in the preheating phase, and the time of the preheating phase is changed in accordance with the high pressure discharge lamp voltage. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
