An optical encoder according to the present invention comprises a scale where a first pattern is formed, and a light receiving portion where a second pattern is formed, wherein the light receiving portion moves relatively with respect to the scale. At least one of the first pattern and the second pattern is formed in a bent band shape so as to obtain a sinusoidal signal, and therefore a reliable sinusoidal electrical signal is capable of being obtained.
