An image pickup apparatus has a function of temporarily recording image data obtained by a solid-state image pickup element and shooting direction data obtained by a 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, in an RAM. When the photographing of a still image is instructed, the apparatus determines a directional difference of shooting directions based on recorded shooting direction data, deletes image data precedent to image data of which the directional difference becomes a predetermined value or more, and records the resultant image data in a recording medium as moving image data.
