The method involves detecting current transmission speed of engaged gear when preset switching transmission speed of target gear is reached. The speed difference of current transmission speed and preset switching transmission speed is calculated. A counter start value associated with calculated speed difference is set and a counter change value is determined as a function of determined acceleration-related driving state variable. The ratio of current acceleration power and maximum acceleration power of engaged gear of vehicle is determined from counter alternation value.
