In a driving-centre for lathes &c. the depressing of a centre 9 causes dogs 16 to grip work S. The centre in an axial stepped-bore 7 of a head 2 is urged outwardly by a spring 11, and bifurcated-plungers 12 in circumferentially-spaced bores 8 of the head, are urged inwardly by springs 14 acting against flanges 13. The dogs 16, pivoted at 17 to the plungers, grip the work by circumferentially-bevelled leading edges 16a and are guided at 16b by recesses 18 in the centre. The centre and plungers slidably engage the chambers 101 and 13<SP>1</SP>, respectively, which are interconnected by a chamber 19 containing a fluid such as grease to transform rearward pressure of the centre into forward pressure of the dogs. The fluid, admitted at 21 with a bleeder 23 removed, is prevented from escaping by seals 24, 26. |
