A driving-side speed detecting portion for detecting a rotational speed of the traction sheave is provided to the traction machine. A driven-side speed detecting portion for detecting a rotational speed of the driven sheave is provided to the driven sheave. The driving-side speed detecting portion and the driven-side speed detecting portion are electrically connected to an operation control device. The operation control device includes a determination portion determining presence or absence of an abnormality in an elevator by calculating a speed difference between rotational speeds of the traction sheave and the driven sheave based on pieces of information from the driving-side speed detecting portion and the driven-side speed detecting portion and comparing the calculated speed difference with a set reference value set in advance, and a control portion for controlling the operation of the elevator based on information from the determination portion.</p>
