A material testing apparatus comprises an actuator 102 for applying a fluctuating load to a material specimen 104 at a variable test frequency, means for measuring the temperature of the specimen during application of the load, and means for varying the test frequency 106, 110 on the basis of the measured temperature whereby to prevent the specimen from exceeding a predetermined maximum temperature during the test. A PID controller 8 may be used. The apparatus prevents the specimen from overheating during a cyclic fatigue test. |
