There is provided a method of forming an image in which the phase delay difference between pairs of adjacent pixels on a pixellated spatial light modulator is used to selectively redirect light in one axis to form pixels of an image. Each pixel of the SLM may be arranged to apply a single phase delay to light incident on that pixel. The method may find application in Schlieren projection systems wherein the phase difference causes a portion of the output light to be diffracted around an optical or Shlieren stop. A 1D lens may also be used to perform a 1D Fourier transform on the light processed by the spatial light modulator.
