摘要 PURPOSE: Optical coupling devices and silicon photonics chips having the same are provided to offer an optical coupling device capable of including a reversely-tapered waveguide and a tapered waveguide extending from a ridge-type waveguide and to configure the sidewall thickness of the tapered waveguide and a second core layer to cover the tapered waveguide, thereby enabling a mode size and a mode shape in the reversely-tapered waveguide to become similar to those in the optical fiber core and reducing an optical loss caused by a mode mismatching. CONSTITUTION: An optical coupling device comprises a lower layer(10), a first core layer(100), a clad layer(300), and a second core layer(200). The lower layer has first and second regions(11, 12). The first core layer is disposed on the lower layer of the first and includes a first and a second waveguides(111, 112) which are respectively disposed on the first and the second regions. The clad layer covers the first waveguide. The second core layer is interposed between the clad layer and the lower layer to cover the second waveguide. The second waveguide has a width decreasing with an increasing distance from the first region and a vertical thickness greater than the thickness of the first waveguide.
