The subsystem (12) has a radio processing unit (18) for processing a digital signal into an electromagnetic radio signal. A software control module (22) controls the radio processing unit based on a primary control request (RP) from a telecommunication application (14), where the subsystem receives (30) a secondary control request (RS) from a cognitive radio application (16), determines (36) a primary idle period of the processing unit, and activates (35) an interface (28) of the processing unit during the idle period to satisfy the secondary control request.
