A method and an apparatus for prioritizing metadata associated to a video data item based on an analysis of priority variables are proposed. A first set of metadata items of a first type and a second set of metadata items of a second type different from the first type are retrieved (10). One or more of a plurality of predetermined priority variables for the first set of metadata items are then calculated (11) from metadata items of the first set of metadata items and metadata items of the second set of metadata items. These one or more priority variables; are then analyzed (12) and the priority values of the metadata items of the first set of metadata items are determined (13) based on results of the analysis (12) of the one or more priority variables.
