PURPOSE: A method for operating an image display device is provided to improve convenience of a user, by converting a 2D image into a 3D image more efficiently. CONSTITUTION: An image display device receives a 2D image through an external device interface unit or a network interface unit (S1110). A control unit of the image display device determines genre of the received 2D image (S1120). The control unit generates a 3D image having a depth value based on the genre (S1130). The control unit displays the generated 3D image on a display (S1140).
