发明名称 Improvements in and relating to the manufacture of cartons
摘要 826,661. Making cartons ; packaging. CHAMBON Ltd., ARMELIN, E. R., and PLASKETT, A. F. G. April 6, 1956 [Jan. 6, 1955], No. 476/55. Classes 18 and 94(1). [Also in Group VIII] Prismatic covered tubular shells for cartons are made by transversely scoring a web of carton material, securing to the web a covering layer of thin material such as regenerated cellulose either in sheets or as an apertured web, so as to leave at least part of the portion of the main web forming the longitudinal tube seam exposed, cutting the laminated web so formed and folding the cut portions to form the shells. The folding may be carried out by apparatus as described in Specification 826,660. The shells may be filled and have both ends closed by applied wrappers or caps. Tear strips may be incorporated. In one embodiment, a web 1 of covering material is fed over a fixed cutter 8 to laminating rolls, 7, 11, the roll 7 carrying cutters 10 and having apertures 9 communicating with a vacuum source. The main web 14 is fed past creasing or scoring rolls 16 18 and rolls 20, 21 applying spaced areas of adhesive, to the rolls 7, 11. A heater 26 may be provided to activate the adhesive. The web 1 is fed at a slower rate than the feed of the rolls 7, 11. As it passes over the knife 8, it is gripped by suction through the apertures 9, but owing to the higher speed of the roll 7, it tends to slip. This eliminates wrinkles or creases in the web 1. Just prior to the web 1 entering the nip of the rolls 7, 11, it is severed by the knives 8, 10 and thereafter applied as blanks to the adhesive areas on the web 14. These blanks are spaced dependent on the relative speeds of the webs 1, 14. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the laminating rolls are plain and are preceded by a suction table which applies drag to the covering blanks just after the leading edge of the covering web has entered the nip of the laminating rolls. The blanks are severed after the web has been so gripped, by means preceding the suction table. After the shells are folded and their seams secured they may be filled and have strips of the same material as the cover blanks applied to each open end. The end closures may be in the form of flanged caps 53 or plain strips 50. In the former ease the shell covering material may be narrower than that of the main web. Apparatus for forming the caps and applying a tear strip 54 comprises pockets 61 on a chain conveyer, into which the shells 51 are pushed by a ram 64. In their passage into the pockets, they intercept cut lengths of tear strip material 65 and fold it over one end. The shells travel past adhesive applying rollers 70, heaters 78 if necessary, and between rolls 74 applying webs 72 of end covering material. The webs are pressed onto the shells by rollers 76, 77 and folded onto their broad faces by ploughs 79 incorporating, if necessary, heaters 80. Knives 81 sever the webs 72 between shells and the shells are forced upwards past running folders 88 carrying spiral blades (not shown) into a vertical stack, the end coverings then being completed.
