The switching device (1) has an arc driver arrangement (16) which generates a magnetic field in the region of pair of contacts (7). The arc driver arrangement has a primary arc guiding arrangement (20) by which an arc produced between the contact portions (9,11) is guided in a primary current direction to a quenching device (14) for quenching the arc. A secondary arc guiding arrangement (21) is provided, by which arc produced between contact portions is guided in secondary current direction opposite the primary current direction, to the quenching device for quenching the arc.
