Liquid-crystalline medium comprises at least one substituted phenyl derivative (I). Liquid-crystalline medium comprises at least one substituted phenyl derivative of formula (I). R1, R2 : 1-15C alkyl or 1-15C alkoxy (in both groups at least one CH 2 is optionally replaced by -CC-, -CF 2O, -CH=CH-, cyclobutane-1,3-diyl, spiro[3.3]heptane-2,6-diyl, -O-, -CO-O- or -O-CO- such that O-atoms are not directly bonded with each other, and at least one H is optionally replaced by halo); Z1 : single bond, -CH 2CH 2-, -CH=CH-, -CH 2O-, -OCH 2-, -CF 2O-, -OCF 2-, -COO-, -OCO-, -C 2F 4-, -CF=CF- or -CH=CH-CHO-; and L1, L2 : F, Cl, CF 3 or CHF 2. Independent claims are also included for: (1) preparing the liquid-crystalline medium, comprising mixing (I) with at least one further liquid-crystalline compound, and optionally adding at least one additive; and (2) an electro-optical display comprising an active-matrix addressing, and the liquid-crystalline medium as a dielectric material.
