The method involves detecting the position and the speed of an elevator car (12) and the corresponding nominal operation value of a lift control (16) by a channel (46). Another channel (48) detects the position and speed of the elevator car corresponding to the previously determined value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a monitoring unit for monitoring elevator car displaced by drive unit in elevator shaft; and (2) an arrangement with an ultrasound positioning unit.
