The circuit has a sub-module (28) having single-phase half bridges (48,49) and single-phase full bridge (50) which are connected in parallel to intermediate circuit capacitor (52). A primary control device (62) is provided for detecting error in sub-modules and for short-circuiting the sub-module through switch (54) connected in parallel to the input of sub-module. A secondary control device (64) is provided for detecting the error and for short-circuiting the sub-module through switch (56) connected in series between the input of sub-module and full bridge, through the full bridge. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for controlling power converter circuit; and (2) control device for controlling power converter circuit.
