Determination of stick slip conditions by analysing pressure waves

A method for determining stick slip conditions includes disposing an operating apparatus 520 in fluid communication with a pressure wave transmission medium 530, such as a drilling fluid. At least one pressure measurement device 540 is disposed at least partially within the pressure wave transmission medium 530 and at some distance from the operating apparatus 520. One or more pressure waves 535 generated by the operating apparatus 520 are measured within the pressure wave transmission medium 530 with the at least one pressure measurement device 540 and pressure measurement data generated therefrom. The pressure measurement data from the at least one pressure measurement device 540 is transmitted to a data acquisition system 550. The pressure measurement data is analyzed to detect one or more stick slip conditions from one or more variations in the pressure measurement data.
