A combustion system having a combustor 2 that includes tub-ing 15 for carrying boiler water, a cy-clone 3 to recover solids from exhaust of the combustor 2 and an external heat exchanger 5 to recover heat from the solids, includes: a bypass 20 for pro-viding boiler water from the combus-tor 2 to tube bundles 6 of the external heat exchanger 5 and a boiler water re-turn 21 for providing boiler water from the tube bundles 6 to waterwall tubing 15 of the combustor 2. A method and an external heat exchanger are also pro-vided.
