PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition and health functional food containing a Hedera rhombea extract for preventing and treating diabetes complication are provided to suppress aldose reductase activity, and to prevent or treat diabetic ophthalmic diseases. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating diabetes complication contains a Hedera rhombea extract or a fraction thereof as an active ingredient. The extract is prepared from branches, leaves, or roots of Hedera rhombea using water, methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, or a mixture thereof. The extract is prepared by room temperature extraction, hot water extraction, enfleurage, reflux extraction, sonication, or steaming. The fraction is prepared by suspending the ethanol extract of Hedera rhombea in water, and fractioning with ethyl acetate. Health functional food for preventing or treating diabetes complication contains the extract or the fraction as an active ingredient.
