<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an engagement shock of a frictional engagement mechanism at engine startup and to reduce a shock while a neutral range is selected by operation. <P>SOLUTION: A normally closed clutch which is hydraulically controlled is provided in a power transmission passage between the engine and a drive wheel, and a piston of the normally closed clutch is energized in the engagement direction by a spring force. Therefore, the normally closed clutch is held in a sliding state even when the engine is stopped, and the engagement shock of the normally closed clutch due to an engine restart is reduced. An electrically driven forward clutch and a reverse brake are provided in the power transmission passage. When the neutral range is selected, the forward clutch and the reverse brake are released after the normally closed clutch is released by the hydraulic control while, when an accelerator is depressed, the forward clutch or the reverse brake is released without waiting for releasing of the normally closed clutch.
