<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique to significantly reduce a data amount of z-stack images without losing as much necessary image information as possible. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus includes: acquisition means for acquiring image data of multiple layers acquired by imaging a subject while changing a focal position in an optical axis direction; division means for dividing the image data of each layer into a plurality of block areas; determination means for determining whether each block area of each layer is a region of interest or a non region of interest by analyzing image data of each layer; and deletion means for deleting an image information amount in a non region of interest, when the non region of interest is present in block areas of other layers corresponding to projection on a region of interest in one layer in the optical axis direction.
