摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having high contrast and excellent view angle characteristics even during high duty drive. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device consists of a first substrate 11, a second substrate 12, a first alignment layer 15, a second alignment layer 16, and a liquid crystal material 17 with negative dielectric anisotropy. A first polarizer 21 and a second polarizer 22 are arranged across the first substrate and the second substrate, of which absorption axes approximately orthogonal to each other, and view angle compensating plates 23 and 24 are arranged at least one of between the first substrate and the first polarizer, and between the second substrate and the second polarizer. The first alignment layer and the second alignment layer are subjected to uniaxial orientation treatment, and are arranged so that the directions of the orientation treatment are opposite to each other; each of the directions develops pretilt angles of 89.8&deg; or more and less than 90&deg; to a liquid crystal layer.
