PURPOSE: A state of charge estimating apparatus for a battery and a method thereof are provided to precisely estimate the SOC through the capacitance of a battery equivalent circuit even in a SOC drop phenomenon, thereby enabling to provide precise SOC and battery life time information to a user. CONSTITUTION: The voltage and current of a battery are measured(S110). The capacitance is computed using a current accumulation value and varied voltage value during a certain amount of battery time(S120). An estimated time for a battery lifetime is computed using the measured voltage and current values and computed capacitance value(S130). A state of charge(SOC) decreasing rate of the battery is predicted from the computed battery lifetime(S140). A battery SOC is estimated using the predicted SOC decreasing rate of the battery(S150). |
