<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable easy downloading of update data for an on-vehicle device. <P>SOLUTION: A navigation device 2, as one embodiment of an on-vehicle device, comprises: a storage part 21 for storing control software; a reading and writing part 23 which reads and writes data from and to a recording medium 6 which is detachable and portable; and a communication part 22 which communicates with a server in order to update the control software. The navigation device 2 writes device information to a recording medium 6 and/or transmits the device information to the server.
