The method involves converting a supply pressure into an activation pressure by a control element. A hydraulic piston is pressurized with the activation pressure to operate clutches (31, 39), where the hydraulic piston is moved back and forth in a hydraulic cylinder. Environmental conditions e.g. actual temperature and operation conditions e.g. actual volumetric flow and actual supply pressure, are considered during control of the control element. Volumetric flow for hydrostatic gear boxes (12, 13) is determined as leakage of the hydrostatic gear boxes.
