<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bacterium having ethanol-producing ability using a synthetic gas as a substrate, and a method for efficiently producing ethanol by using the bacterium. <P>SOLUTION: Acetic acid/ethanol-producing bacteria have been investigated by culturing microorganisms in soil samples using H<SB POS="POST">2</SB>and CO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>as a substrate. The acetic acid/ethanol generation is ascertained through HPLC by collecting 50 kinds of soil samples from nation-widely various places and performing a batch culture in a complexing medium by use of H<SB POS="POST">2</SB>and CO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>as a substrate. In addition, a microbial flora stably producing higher concentration ethanol is determined by culturing the same using a H<SB POS="POST">2</SB>-CO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>mixture gas as a substrate. The obtained flora is observed under a microscope to identify at least two kinds of bacteria, and therefore a single bacterium is obtained by a roll tube method.
