The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition or a health functional food for the treatment or prevention of obesity, type IotaIota diabetes, or hyperlipidemia comprising, as an active ingredient, a gypenoside extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino which includes at least one dammarane type triterpenoid soponin compound selected from the group consisting of gypenoside UL1, gypenoside UL2, gypenoside UL3, gypenoside UL4, gypenoside UL5, gypenoside UL6, gypenoside UL7, and gypenoside XLVIII.
