In addition to the stitch-retaining plate 13 which is secured to move with the cam lock and which is resiliently urged by springs 16 against the knocking over comb 4 of a flat bed machine hold the stitches back as the needles are advanced after knitting a course, wire elements 20 are pivotally mounted on the underside of the plate 13 so that their end portions 20b extend in a trailing direction in relation to the movement of the cam lock and press the fabric against the comb whereby it is guided downwardly away from the needles.
