Class 86 A mixing and kneading apparatus comprises a two part worm casing a, Fig. 2, a worm e rotatable therein, the thread e2, Fig. 1, of which is provided along its periphery with successive steps or shoulders e3, the thread falling from one shoulder towards the next proceeding in the direction of rotation so that wedge-shaped spaces e4 are formed between it and the inner wall of the casing, the volume of the spaces increasing in the direction of rotation of the worm, and a grinding roll f provided between parts of the thread e 2, the periphery of the roll being provided with similar steps f1 and progressive falls, to those of the thread e2.
