The method involves rotatably driving a material roller (02) of a material web by a driving motor (04) in a rotating direction opposite to another rotating direction for determining outer diameter of the material roller until position changing of a radial-movable roller takes place from a position to another position. A measure for length changing of the material web and a measure for an angle segment are provided for determining the outer diameter in an electronic circuit and/or a computing unit, where the length changing is caused by the position changing of the element. The roller is designed as a compensating roller or a dancing roller. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a roller carrier.
