<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shell and tube type heat exchanger, which merges and mixes a heat medium flowing meanderingly between a lower stage side and an upper stage side in a body in a certain direction before a heat medium outlet so that variations in temperature of the heat medium at the heat medium outlet is eliminated. <P>SOLUTION: The shell and tube type heat exchanger includes a body 1 in which a refrigerant inlet 6a and a refrigerant outlet 6b are arranged at one end side of the body 1, a communication chamber 7 is arranged at the another end side of the body 1, a refrigerant going pipe 3a for communicating the refrigerant inlet 6a and the communication chamber 7 and a refrigerant return pipe 3b for communicating the communication chamber 7 and the refrigerant outlet 6b are arranged in the body 1, and a heat medium inlet 8a is arranged at the one end side and a heat medium outlet 8b is arranged at the another end side. A plurality of partition plates 10 of a partially notched circular-shape are installed between the heat medium inlet 8a and the heat medium outlet 8b in the body 1 so that the notched parts 11 are alternately located in a back side and a front side in the body 1.
