Class 109 An end fitting for a steel cable, wire rope or like member 2 comprises a sleeve 4 into which, the member 2 may b e inserted s o that a terminal portion projects from one end of the sleeve 4, a plug 5, which may have straight or spiral grooves, which can be hammered axially into the sleeve 4 to wedge the member strands within the sleeve, and a socket part 6 arranged for retained engagement over the sleeve and through which the terminal portion of the member 2 projects, the socket 6 being rotatable on the sleeve 4 to twist the strands of the member 2 together, and there being an observation opening 12 in the side of the socket part so that correct positioning and twist of the terminal portion may be checked. The socket 6 may be formed integrally with or adapted for attachment to a connecting member, such as a clevis, eye or hook. The plug 5 may be axially bored to accommodate the core of the member 2, or a hemp or plastic core may be cut out before inserting the plug 5. Alternatively, the plug 5 may be formed in two halves which embrace the member 2 and are held together by a circlip. The plug 5 may have shallow circumferential grooves if intended for use with small diameter flexible wire ropes. |
