The method involves receiving the electronic image of test object (11) on cigarette package (10) from a camera. The difference image between the electronic image and the stored reference image is obtained. The image information of the difference image is evaluated to identify the error in test object. The position-dependent weighting of the image information for each image area of difference image is considered during evaluation of difference image. An independent claim is included for a device for optically inspecting test object on cigarette package.
