PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus, an image processing method, and a program by which an area, including an image element, is selected from among document images. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus obtains a selected area from a processed image, on the basis of a designated area designated to the processed image. The image processing apparatus includes: a designate area information acquisition means which obtains designated area information, showing the range of the designated area; a first candidate selected area acquisition means which obtains a first candidate selected area which is a maximum area which can be a selected area, on the basis of the designated area information; a second candidate selected area acquisition means which divides the first candidate selected area by the types of image elements contained the first candidate selected area to acquire a second candidate selected area; and a selected area acquisition means which integrates areas of image elements included in the second candidate selected area, on the basis of the image elements and acquires a selected area.
