Straight chain hydrocarbons are separated from hydrocarbon oils by adduct formation with urea, by carrying out the adduction formation in two stages, in the first of which the oil and urea are subjected to intense mixing for a period not exceeding 5 minutes and in the second of which the mixture is subjected to moderate agitation for a period of 10-30 minutes, the intense mixing in the first stage being effected with a stirrer operating at about 100 times the velocity of the stirrer used for the second stage, and the solid adduct is separated from the raffinate solution. The process may be applied to dewaxing oils. A solvent such as methylene chloride may be added to the mixture. A part of the raffinate may be returned to the first stage to dilute the oil.
