The device has a sensor (5) e.g. magneto resistive sensor, Hall sensor or magnetic field sensor, detecting a field direction and field strength of a magnetic field produced by a magnetic transducer (4) e.g. bar magnet or magnetic film. An evaluation unit processes signals generated by the sensors for indicating relative movement between a communication module (2) and a measuring unit (1) of a consumption metering device. The communication module processes consumption data measured by the measuring unit. A north pole of the transducer is aligned with respect to the sensor.
