The method involves receiving a footrest signal, and increasing return force (40) of a pedal lever by using an actuator in response to receiving the footrest signal. The footrest signal is cancelled in form of a ramp (48). The increased return force of the pedal lever is continuously reduced by the actuator through an intermediate stage (49) in response to canceling the footrest signal. The return force is increased to a predefined increased return force (44), and the increased return force is reduced to normal force (42).
