A machine for cutting shoulder pads from an intermittently-fed blocK of material comprises a cutting-tool reciprocally-movable relative to the block in a direction transverse to the direction of feed of the block, the cutting-tool having two oppositely - directed cutting - edges, each of which performs a cutting stroke during one complete reciprocal movement of the cutting-tool, means for effecting such reciprocal movement during dwell periods of the block, and means for altering the angular relationship between the cutting-tool and the block between successive cutting - strokes. As shown in Fig. 1, a rotatable knife 5 for cutting shoulder pads from a block 2 of foamed material is mounted on a swing-arm 4 the pivot-pin 6 of which is movable in a guideway 7 by means of a push-rod 8 which is connected to a pivotally-mounted lever 9 carrying a roller 11 running over an edge cam 12 on a shaft 15. The lever 9 is connected to one of a plurality of holes 13 in the push-rod. The arm 4 is moved in an arcuate path by means of a crank and a connecting-rod 14. In a modification, Fig. 5, a forked member comprising limbs 20, 21 is mounted at the end of the swing-arm 4, the ends of the limbs being formed as bearings for a cranked spindle 22 which carries a skid-bar 24 over which runs a reciprocable band-knife 25. The spindle 22 is driven by means at one end 23 thereof. In this case, the block of material is rocked about its longitudinal axis between cutting-strokes. In a further modification, Fig. 9, a block 50 of foamed material is fed through a channel having a bottom 56 and sidecheeks 57, 58 to rows of cutting-knives 51 to 55 oscillatable about axes 61. The front face of the channel bottom is provided with recesses 59, 60, the recesses being provided with pairs of jaws 62, 63, the distance between a pair of jaws 62, or 63, being less than the width of a shoulder pad. The rows of cutting-knives are connected to a transverse beam which is connected to a swing-arm having a displaceable pivot pin. Alternatively, the channel may be rocked relatively to the cutting-tools.
