844,173. Air liquefaction apparatus pressure exchangers. SPALDING, D. B. July 18, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 23638/57. Classes 8(1) and 8(2). Liquefaction of a gas, e.g. air is effected by a pressure exchanger having a first cold compressed air inlet duct 4, Fig. 6, communicating with each of a plurality of peripherally arranged rotating cells 1 as the latter passes the leading edge 7 of said duct 4, a first colder expanded air outlet 5 at the same end 2 of the cell and which communicates with each cell following closure thereof from duct 4, a second compressed air inlet duct 12 at the other end 3 of the cell and communicating therewith before duct 4 is opened and a second outlet duct 10 at the same end 3 and through which warmed compressed air issues ; the first outlet duct 5 being axially sub-divided by a partition 6 to receive in division 5A expanded air colder than that passing through division 5B. In operation air from a compressor 14, Fig. 7, having been cooled in an exchanger 15 in heat exchange with a portion of the expanded gas from duct 5A and the whole from duct 5B is fed to the duct 4, any condensed liquid being drained at 21 and liquid air from duct 5A is drained at 18. Duct 12 is supplied by a compressor 19 and the warmed compressed air from duct 10 is cooled at 20 and supplied to the warm end of exchanger 15.
