<p>An electrical machine, comprises a second rotor 18 rotatable about a second axis whose surface is held adjacent a surface of a first rotor 10 that is rotatable about a first axis. One rotor surface carries ferromagnetic salient poles (fig 5 ,26) and the other rotor surface carries magnets (fig 5, 28), arranged so that rotation of the first rotor about the first axis causes rotation of the second rotor about the second axis. The first rotor can be a hollow torus having an annular gap in which the second rotor rotates. Rotation of the second rotor can cause current to be generated in a stator 24 inside the second rotor. A linear component (fig 15, 184) can be movable along a first axis and have a surface that is held adjacent a surface of a rotor (fig 15, 180) that is rotatable about a second axis. One of the rotor and linear component surfaces carries ferromagnetic salient poles (fig 5 ,26) and the other carries magnets (fig 5, 28), arranged so that motion of the linear component along the first axis causes rotation of the second rotor about the second axis. Either of the linear component and the rotor can be a hollow cylinder located around the other, and their axis can be coincident. The machine can take the form of a motor with motion caused by applying electrical energy or a generator where motion is caused by wind, tide or wave energy.</p> |
