摘要 A halogenated olefin polymer is prepared by polymerizing the olefin using an organometallic catalyst in the presence of a halogenated solvent and then treating the polymer with a halogenation reagent in the presence of the halogenated solvent. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, ethylene-propylene and ethylene -1-butene mixtures. By organo metallic catalyst is meant an organometal compound, a metal or a metal hydride together with a Group IV, V, VI or VIII metal compound. A very large number of specified organo-metallic catalysts include the aluminium alkyls, the aluminium hydrides, and the aluminium alkyl halides, as well as those of other Group I-III metals, together with the oxides, hydrides, halides, oxyhalides, alcoholates and organic acid salts of titanium, zirconium, chromium thorium, molybdenum, vanadium, iridium and platinum. A third catalyst component, being an organic or metal halide e.g. ethyl bromide, 1-brombenzene, cyclohexyl chloride and aluminium chloride, or a halogen, a hydrogen halide, an organo phosphorus containing compound, a peroxide, a metal alkoxide, a carbide or an acetylenic compound may also be present. Carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethane are the preferred halogenated solvents and elemental chlorine the preferred halogenation agent. The halogenated polymer may be sulphonated, sulphonating agents being sulphur dioxide, chlorosulphonic acid and sulphonyl chloride. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
