An apparatus for and a method of thermal treatment for stress relief or change in microstructure of a component using a fluidised bed of powder includes a treatment chamber 50 for receiving at least a treatment part of the component and a powder reservoir 52. The powder reservoir 52 has heating or cooling means 68. A flexible powder conveyor 54 (e.g. educator) links the treatment chamber 50 and the powder reservoir 52, continuously conveying powder from the reservoir 52 to the treatment chamber 50. The chamber 50 is independently positionable with respect to the powder reservoir 52. Parts of a component with non-planar and non-horizontal surfaces may be annealed with the non-treatment parts extending out of the treatment chamber 50, sealed to reduce loss of powder. The fluidising gas may be recycled and thermal energy may be recovered during this process. It may further comprise a kit of parts suitable for assembling an apparatus, wherein it includes two or more interchangeable treatment chambers of different shapes.
