A hinge device, a portable terminal having the hinge device, and a controlling method thereof are provided to enable a controller to convert a mode of the terminal automatically according to the current positions of the first and second bodies when the first and second bodies are rotated by a triaxial hinge, thereby realizing usage convenience. A hinge device(30) consists of at least more than two axes for horizontally rotating the first and second bodies(10,20) as folding the first body(10) by being installed between the first and second bodies(10,20). The hinge device(30) comprises as follows. Swing hinge units(32,34) support at least one of the bodies(10,20) so that the supported body swings in horizontal direction. A folding hinge unit(36) folds the first body(10) so that the body(10) is opened and closed, by being connected between the first and second bodies(10,20). |
