Class 127 The beet are conveyed in a flume 1 to a travelling grid 2 over a vertical container which may be'in two parts 5, 6 into the first of which the water carries the coarse impurities, while the beet are dropped from the end of the grid into the part 6 from which the water overflows to carry them on to the grid 3 where lighter impurities are separated into a hopper 12, the beet passing over a further grid, which may be in two parts 4a, 4b where they receive a final washing as from jets 14a, 14b which may contain disinfectant. The grids 4a, 4b are preferably inclined upwardly. Impurities may be removed periodically from the container 5, 6 through the outlet 9. The overflow of the beet on to the grid 3 may be assisted by supplying water or compressed air at 11.
